Play65.com

Great interface and nicer then average look. Joining  is free and you can play for "fun money" with no charge at all and an "auto refill" every time you run out of juice, or start using real money (still no membership fees). You can even watch other games in progress that somebody else is playing. Players have a rating so you can look for opponents with equal ability. There are matches, tournaments, event-tournaments, and free tournaments where you can win real money for free. For those who play for real money - I found the money withdrawal mechanism (the "Cashier") easy and reliable. The money arrived in my PayPal account less then 3 days after cashing it.
You can download the client from Play65 site or directly from this mirror.

As the name implies this is a veteran site in the genre. You can play backgammon (for free) or just watch. The actual protocol for connecting to a FIBS server is Telnet (did you skip that history lesson?). Fortunately, there are enough graphic interfaces on the net to download that do the dirty work for you, so it's actually similar to downloading and using typical client software. The setup is a little more cumbersome than on other platforms. The common game style is match play with regular tournaments to participate in. A performance based rating system is employed.

A popular site with experienced players, generally based on the FIBS environment with some added features. Many restrictions on non-paying members, among them - only paying member can be rated,  play long matches or play against the computer.

Part of the MSN games portal, a popular free site with many running games and tournaments.  Many problems with the rating system - from bugs to cheating.

Part of the Yahoo! "Mega-portal", this backgammon site operates skill-level based game rooms together with "social" rooms and "ladder" system competitions. Though it has its advantages, it is sometimes considered to be a newbie's playground, a training camp before stepping up to sites with more serious players.

Playing Backgammon is free on this "family oriented" games site. Players get ranks by games played. Java interface (no download needed).

Backgammon games for fun or for money. Play ladders or cash tournaments. Java interface.

Arcade games oriented platform. Downloadable client software. You can try it for free. Subscription costs 10$ per year.
