In this
article
I have
listed the basic
backgammon tips
that you need to know in order
to
participate
in
backgammon tournaments.
Backgammon tips
and rules - Basic names.
Home Board - the part in the
board that you
should get your men into.
From that part you 'dump' the men in order to win
the game.
Discs - You have 30 discs in
each color, 15 to you and 15 to your
opponent.
Outer Board - the other side of
the board, opposite your home
board.
Points - The places where discs
should be put.
Backgammon
tips
and rules
- win condition. A win condition
means you bring all
your discs to your home board
and then 'dump' them all.
Backgammon
tips
and rules
- Where
to put the discs?
Place five discs of your
color on the Point closest to
the Bar within the Home Board on your side. Place
two discs of your color on the
Point farthest from the Bar within the Home Board
on your opponent's side. Place
three discs of your color on the second Point
from the Bar within the Outer
Board on your side. Your opponent should do the
same on his side of the board.
Place five discs of your color on the Point farthest from the
Bar within the Outer Board on
your opponent's side.
Backgammon
tips
and rules
- How to play?
After putting your discs you
should decide
which player makes the first move. To do so you and your opponent should
roll
a die, the one with the higher score
starts first. After that you should
roll the dice and move your
discs according to the score you get on the
dice. As a rule, it is forbidden
to move your discs backwards. As mentioned above, in order to win
you need to move your discs into
your home board.
Backgammon
tips
and rules
- Double.
If you rolled double (rolling
double
means that your dice show the same
number), then you should play the
numbers you got twice.
Backgammon
tips
and rules
- Hitting
If you have a point which is
occupied by a
single disc, then you should be aware
that opponent's disc might try landing on it. If your opponent's disc
lands on your own disc,it is considered a 'hit". In
case of a hit, you should place
the disc which has just been hit on the bar. (the area that
separates the outer board from
the home board(.
Backgammon
tips
and rules
-
In case you have been hit.
To 'Release' a
disc from the bar you should
roll the dice. in case that one of the dice
shows a number which will take
you to a point in the opponent's home board, you should check
if this point is occupied by 2
or more of the opponent's discs. If not
, then you are allowed to put
your disc there. Otherwise, you lose your turn.
Backgammon
tips
and rules
- Bearing
off.
Finally, when all of your 15
discs
are placed inside your home board, you
should start 'bearing off'. "Bearing off"
means removing your discs from
the home board. You should bear off
your discs by rolling a dice, if
the dice number is similar to the point on which
the disc resides, then you
should remove the disc from the board. If
there isn't a number on the
point which was rolled by the dice , you should
move a disc located on a
higher-numbered point. If no such point is available,
then you should remove a disc
from the highest point occupied... You don't have to bear off if
you want to make any other move.
Those are
the rules of the game in
short.
I hope those
Backgammon tips
and rules
might prove useful.
